Former French President Sarkozy sentenced to one year in prison

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Thursday, September 30, was sentenced to one year in prison for illegally financing his 2012 election campaign. By court decision, Sarkozy will serve his sentence at home under electronic surveillance. Earlier in the day, a court in Paris found the ex-president guilty of knowingly overspending. Sarkozy himself was not present at the hearing,- DW reports.

The court concluded that Sarkozy was aware of the maximum legal spending on the presidential campaign, but despite this, he continued to spend money on campaign events, despite a written warning about the risk of overspending. "Sarkozy, being a presidential candidate, did not take measures to control spending," Judge Caroline Viguier said, noting that "this was not his first election campaign, and he had experience."
