The European Union (EU) intends to expand its presence in the Indo-Pacific region in response to the AUKUS military alliance between the United States, Britain and Australia. Such plans at a press conference in Brussels were shared by the head of the European Union's foreign policy service, Josep Borrell, Deutsche Welle reports.
According to him, the EU needs to work to expand its strategic autonomy and strengthen political and defense ties in the region.
“We were not consulted when making this decision (AUKUS agreement). And this pact underlines the importance for the EU of strengthening our strategic autonomy, our ability to act independently,” the head of the foreign policy service said.
Borrell noted that the EU's plan includes exploring ways to ensure an expanded deployment of naval forces by EU member states to protect maritime communications and freedom of navigation.
