The cost of the total land bank of the 20 largest Russian landowners has grown over the past year by almost a third - from 471.6 billion to 617.31 billion rubles, Forbes calculated on March 3, 2021.
According to the publication, the total of 8.3 million hectares belong to the participants in the rating of the 20 largest landowners in Russia. This is approximately equal to the area of Austria (8.39 million hectares).
The list was headed by the firm "Agrocomplex im. NI Tkachev ", owned by the family of the former Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation and former governor of Krasnodar region Alexander Tkachev. The firm owns 660 thousand hectares, worth 88.6 billion rubles in the most expensive regions of the country: in Republic of Adygea, Rostov region, Krasnodar and Stavropol regions.
Recall that the Krasnodar region was part of the state of Circassia in the 19th century and which was conquered by the Russian Empire in 1864. Before that, more than two million people lived in Circassia. After the occupation, less than one hundred thousand people remained there. The vast majority of Circassians were expelled into the Ottoman Empire.
In addition, the territory of Circassia also included the territory of Republic of Adygea, Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria and Republic of Karachay-Circassia. Today, in the Circassian homeland live about one million Circassians and about 6 million Circassians live in the Diaspora.
